This place is wrong in so many ways. Basically, the owner runs his own version of caricature of an old supper club, and for the most part he himself hogs all of the music. It isn't so much a venue for live bands as it is a place owned and run by a guy who knows little about the biz of properly running such a place. At best, it's cheesy ina sorta funny way. At worst, the infrastructure of the whole establishment is one big trainwreck.
This is one of the most venerable live music-dance clubs in the city ! Why in the world only one other review...of their open-mic night ? Place has a great vibe, they pay decently, and there's always a very hip, built-in crowd. Fun room to play, acoustics are good and the sound guy is decent. Really, crowd is incredibly fun and very appreciative of good bands. Not an easy gig to get, but worth it.
Great place to go if you are in the audience. But they jack their bands royally. Nice space, good bar, good crowd..again, if you are a patron. This place USED to pay their bands pretty well, to the tune of around $250-300, and there used to be no cover so the place would always be packed when bands played. But they have recently cheaped out, bigtime. They pay their bands zilch, only give us a small food/drink comp, force us to charge a cover, then TAKE $75 of that cover to pay THEIR employee, the sound guy. (I would think that if a band pulls in 25-30 people who wouldn't go there otherwise, people who eat and drink while there....the place can afford to pay their own sound guy, no ?) On a good night, this means the band MAY end up with $60-80 (the WHOLE band, not per person). No % of bar, no flat fee...nuthin. Another sad example of what Portland venues think they can get away with. This place used to respect its bands.....no longer.
